Background: Diet is one of the factors associated with nutritional status during pregnancy. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between dietary patterns and chronic energy deficiency (CED) status based on a questionnaire conducted among pregnant women in Muara Nibung Village, Central Tapanuli Regency.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in March 2025 on 60 pregnant women recruited using total sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire. Dietary patterns were categorized as good and poor, while CED status was recorded as yes or no. The relationship between the two variables was analyzed using the Pearson Chi-square test. Crude prevalence ratios (CRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated from contingency tables.
Results: A total of 25 respondents (41.7%) had CED status based on the questionnaire. The proportion was 60.0% (18/30) in the poor diet group and 23.3% (7/30) in the good diet group. There was a relationship between diet and CED status (χ² = 8.30; p = 0.004), with a crude RP of 2.57 (95% CI 1.26–5.24).
Conclusion: Poor diet is associated with a higher proportion of CED status. Interpretation of the findings is limited by the cross-sectional design, the questionnaire determination of CED status, and the lack of confounding controls. Objective nutritional assessment is needed to confirm the findings
